Waiting for the right moment to begin something new can keep you stuck in a rut forever. How many times have you found yourself waiting for the right moment to being your thesis, start a business or start working out, only to leave it for the next day? We so often talk ourselves out of starting something because we want to wait for the perfect moment to begin. The reality is that there is never any perfect moment to begin, the perfect feeling you’re looking for only comes once you start and the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll get into it! The thing we’re often chasing is a ‘state of flow,’ but the only way you’re gonna get into a state of flow is if you stop waiting for tomorrow and start now.
When we choose to wait for the right moment before we can begin something, we’re allowing so many opportunities that could have been ours to fly right by us. I love reminding myself that, ‘preparation meets opportunity.’ It reminds me that if I just start, put myself out there and do the work, then at some point an opportunity will have no option but to come my way. If you keep waiting for tomorrow, you’re gonna allow life to pass you by. Sometimes when we’re stuck in a rut, we need a little reminder of just how much we have to lose to scare us into taking action!
To put this into perspective for you, I compiled a list of reasons why you should stop waiting for tomorrow and start now. Every time you feel like you can’t get up, pull out these list of reasons why you should start taking action now!
1. The Beginning Is Always The Hardest
If you can just get through sitting down and starting each day, then congratulations, you’ve accomplished the hard part! Staring at that blank canvas is always the hardest and most intimidating part of any project. If you can just get started and keep the ball rolling, you’ll see just how much you actually fall in love with the process of putting things together and getting things accomplished one step at a time. We so often say to ourselves, “I’ll ‘start’ tomorrow.” Keyword, start. The start is what causes fear in us and what holds us back.
In Mark Manson’s book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F#ck, he highlights this concept pretty well. He says, that if you just start now, everything else will flow. For example, if you want to write a book, figure out the topics you want to write about first, then go onto creating a contents page, from there maybe write an outline from each chapter and so on. Basically, once you start and begin to see just how things are coming together, it will motivate you to keep going. So stop waiting for tomorrow, start now and you’ll achieve things quicker!
2. Your Resources May Not Always Be Here
Sometimes we don’t realize the opportunity we have right in front of us until its gone. I’m talking about things as little as having your own space, a free schedule, a gym membership, a laptop to work on, Wi-Fi, hell even electricity! Of course, in your own scenario things may look different to you but the point is to not take your resources for granted. At any given point in time, something could be taken away from you or stop working or just go downhill and before you know it, you’re stuck saying, “I wish I started earlier.”
You have everything you need around you right now, to get to where you want to go. Stop making excuses for yourself. If you don’t have something, find a way to go out and get it! Stop wasting your time saying, “I can’t.” Instead, start rewiring your mindset and tell yourself, “actually, I can!”
3. Staying Stuck Is Costing You More
In the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, talks about how, both your good and bad habits compound. The issue is that at first, we don’t often see the results of our actions. For example, you go to the gym everyday for a month and see no difference or perhaps you binge eat three days in a row and the scale doesn’t budge much. It isn’t that the efforts you put in aren’t working for you, they’re just compounding until the time comes for the result of your previous actions to finally cause a breakthrough. To put this into perspective for you, here’s a powerful quote Clear shares in his book by Jacob Riss.
“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.”
You may not realize it now, but later on you’re going to want to kick yourself for all the time you wasted staying stuck. Yes, to a certain extent, its okay to be stuck, not know what you want to do and take the time to figure things out. However, at some point in your life, you have to take a good look at yourself and ask, “is life not working in my favor or am I just not doing the work?” You have to realize that each day you waste is a day that could have been used to lay your foundation towards the success you want. So stop waiting for tomorrow, start now.
4. There Is Freedom On The Other Side
Something in life, we have to realize is that there is freedom waiting for us on the other side if we just take the leap. We allow fear to paralyze us so much that it holds us back from achieving our full potential. This is how we stay stuck and live a life of regret in the end. When we allow our fears and a mindset of lack to control us, we don’t realize just how good we can actually have things if we just did the work.
The point is, stop allowing fear of failure to control you from going out there and trying until you get it right. Most times, its not that you’re afraid of fail ‘again,’ its that you haven’t even ‘tried’ moving forward to what it is you want yet.
5. Someone Else May Steal Your Idea
I love the book, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert on creative living. In one chapter she talks about how our ideas don’t necessarily belong to us. They just float from one person to another, until the right person actually uses it. For example, ever had an idea of inventing something you know no one else has ever thought about before, and then a few months or years later you see that same idea has been brought to life by someone else? Yeah I bet its happened to us all at some point! But this is exactly what she means.
If you don’t use that wonderful idea for a novel or concept for a start up business, that idea will eventually become someone else’s. Now there’s nothing wrong with this if you don’t care too much to act on your idea. However if you do, a great idea for you would be to stop waiting for tomorrow, start today and take action!
6. Life Is Too Short To Not Do Everything You Ever Wanted
In saying that, life is way too short for you to not go after what you want. Spend time living your life doing the things you’ve always wanted to do by going towards your goals. I always say to myself, I want to live a creative life and by that I mean, living a life day to day that is filled with me exploring my passions. In other words, do what satisfies you or work towards that passion. Stop waiting for tomorrow, start today. If you have to wait tables to get to your dream do it. If you have to live with three other roommates before moving into a space you love, do it! As long as you’re not hurting anyone, do whatever it takes to get to where you need to go!
We often don’t realize just how precious our life and time is. Stop choosing to give your time and energy away to people, things and situations that aren’t worthy of you. Time is the most precious resource you’ve got going for you and one that you can never get back. When you begin to value your time, you will attract people and opportunities that respect and value your time too.
7. The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side
I see this all the time with people who are stuck in life. Its so easy when we’re young to stop working towards something when we see things aren’t going fast enough as we’d like them to and then quit. We think we have all the time in the world. The issue here is, this cycle could keep us stuck for the rest of our lives. Sometimes you have to remember to water the grass you have and tend to it. Stop thinking that you’re gonna see results immediately. You have to understand that good things take time. They require an actual consistent effort as well as your undivided time and energy.
Remember in the beginning of this post when we spoke about compound interest? Yeah, that’s exactly what this means. The next time you’re thinking of quitting at anything you wanted in life, always ask yourself if you’re quitting because it really isn’t working out or if you’re just not willing to put in the work it takes to achieve the success of it. Realize when you’re making excuses for yourself, versus an actual reason. By stalling, stopping and starting over, all you’re doing is prolonging the results you want in life.
8. You Could Change Your Entire Life
The crazy thing about not waiting for tomorrow is that the sooner you start, the more opportunities you’ll come across. I recently watched a YouTube video by Ali Abdaal on how writing made him a Millionaire. I love how he described that you never know what putting yourself out there can do for your life. One of the main topics he touched on in the video that really resonated with me was how scared he was to start a YouTube channel because he was afraid of what his friends and family would think. He later on realized that the people didn’t actually care and he was only holding himself back out of fear. Another interesting thing he mentioned was how, by just starting his YouTube channel, he had so many more opportunities come his way.
I’m not saying that if you start today, something drastically crazy is going to happen to you tomorrow. However, the fact is that you could change your entire life when you no longer hold yourself back. Ali Abdaal is one of many success stories that we’re patient and consistent enough to start somewhere and keep going. All that time and preparation is bound to meet you with great opportunities ahead. This is just another reason why you should stop waiting for tomorrow, start now!
9. You Could Be Busy Tomorrow
When I was in school, my mother always used to tell me to get my projects done days before its due. She always said, you never know what tomorrow brings, so get it done asap! Tomorrow, you could be sick, busy, tired or have some completely life changing event occur to you. The point is, always be prepared. So stop waiting for tomorrow, start now and get things done while you have the time and resources available to you. Life is so unpredictable. One moment you could be in one place with all the time in the world, and the next you have no time to yourself!
It’s always better to be proactive where you can. This includes things like meal prepping, cleaning your car, showering earlier, working out earlier and just in general getting things done asap. My rule has always been, if I can do it in five minutes, like making my bed or washing the dishes, then get it done now!
