How many times in your life have you set a goal at the start of a new year and not lived up to it? Three months later you’re down the line thinking, “I’ll just do it next year.” The reason we give up on our goals so soon is not because we fail at them. We give up because we want that instant gratification from the result of achieving a goal. We are constantly thinking of how good having the end result will feel, that we forget we still have to work toward our goals in order to accomplish them. This is when things get a bit frustrating and the process seems to be taking forever when in reality its only been two days! We forget how important trusting the process is.
In achieving your goals, you have to remember that the only thing separating you from what you want, is time and being patient with the process. This is why trusting the process is important in achieving any goal in life. The only way you can do that is by staying focused and getting into alignment with what you want everyday. Achieving great things does not happen in a day, it takes time. Any successful person will tell you that. When you set out a goal that you want to reach, you have to be willing to do the work it takes in between, no matter how long it takes and be dedicated to reaching that goal. As time goes your progress will build, however before you can see the end result, its your responsibility to trust that it will come and be patient enough to wait.
1. Stop Associating ‘Happiness’ With Your Goals
When we associate our happiness with our goals, we adopt the mentality that we’ll be happy when we get this or that. We live in the future so much so that we forget to enjoy the journey towards our goals. You have to learn how to enjoy the journey. Understand that once you do actually reach your goals, you’re never truly going to be happy, you’re always going to want more and to better yourself. There’s nothing wrong with this at all but you have to remember that this is why every moment of your life deserves significance.
Where you are right now is a moment in your life that you’re going to one day look back on as a life experience that took you to where you wanted to go. The things you go through now, are lessons that you’re going to be grateful for later. Sometimes what we have in the moment may not look like much, but later on you may appreciate just how simple your life was or the lessons it gave you. So appreciate the moments you’re in and learn to stop thinking that the only time you’ll be happy is once you’ve reached your goals. Fall in love with the journey you’re on because all you’ve got is now.
2. Stay Focused On The Grind
The only time we can really trust the process and reach our goals is when we get into alignment. When you’re able to wake up everyday and do the things you know it takes to get you to where you need to go, that is how you get into alignment. When you choose to align with your goals, you will inevitably achieve them, in fact you will constantly feel like you’re one step closer all the time. This is when trusting the process gets easy because you know you’re heading in the right direction and your progress shows.
Trusting the process only gets difficult when you are looking for instant gratification and quit too soon. It can be hard to not have expectations of where you’re going when you start working towards a goal and not see instant results play out. However, the best thing you can do is put your head down for a while, get rid of all the distraction around you and just focus on the work for a bit. The results are bound to show up when you just keep doing the work. We all know what we have to do in order to get to where we need to go, its just a matter of sticking to it each day and physically doing it.
3. Let Go Of Having A Mindset Of Lack
Usually what also stops us from reaching our goals is having a mindset of lack. This is when we start to settle and get comfortable with things that we’re told are an easier way out. Instead of starting that business, you settle for a 9-5 job or instead of leaving that toxic relationship, you stay another year because you’re afraid you’re not gonna find someone better to love you. These decisions to remain complacent and not push yourself out of your comfort zone, all come from a mindset of lack.
When you have a mindset of lack it creates fear in you. Fear that there is nothing better for you than what you already have in front of you. This is why a lot of people never end up achieving those big goals they once had and get sucked into mediocre lifestyles. Having a mindset of lack stops you from trusting the process because it creates fear of failure in you and your ability to reach your goals. The next time these fears come up, recognize them and choose what is uncomfortable and unfamiliar to you in order to break the pattern of staying complacent. When you stick to doing things out of your comfort zone as little as they may be, that is how you rewire your mind and break the cycle of a mindset of lack.
4. Open Up New Possibilities
Trusting the process and just going for your goals puts you on a path that opens you up to so many new possibilities. The fact that you have the courage to just go all in and start on a new journey can really end up giving you so many more options that would’ve never been opened up to you before you began. All of these new possibilities can happen for you when you just choose to trust the journey and give things a chance to play out for yourself.
When you set goals and go on a journey towards achieving something, you never know what new doors could open up for you. That is the reason why its so important to trust in the process. Your goal to write a little novel now, could maybe one day end up as a blockbuster movie. You just never know what possibilities you could open yourself up to or who is watching you. That’s the best part about just doing you and trusting the process.
5. Start Where You Are Right Now
The biggest way you can show that you are aligning and trusting the process, is by simply just starting. No matter where you are, with what you have or how little you may think you know. All that matters is that you put that energy into your goals out there and begin. When you choose to just go all in and start working on your goals, that is already half the battle won. It’s okay if you don’t really know what you’re doing at first, that is the point of the journey. You fail, you learn and you try again and again until you find a method to it all.
Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be done. If your first product, date, interview, practice session and so on is perfect, then you probably took too long to start. There is nothing wrong with things not being perfect when you first start out, all that matters is that you know you started. Think of your journey like art. You’re not gonna create a masterpiece the very first time you pick up a paint brush, but with consistent practice, effort and dedication, eventually you will. You can only possibly go that direction!
6. Live In The Moment
There is no better gift you can give yourself than to simply realize that all you have is right now. You don’t know if there will be a tomorrow and the past literally does not matter. When you focus on the present moment and be more mindful of where you are right now that is how you become happy with yourself and your progression flies by. Learn to focus on how far you’ve come, not how far you still have to go. That will only create unnecessary anxiety for you and push you back into your comfort zone in the long run.
When you learn to live in the moment, you actually are more engaged in what you’re doing and what’s in front of you so much so that you get things done faster and more efficiently. There is no point in stressing over a future you can’t control, all you can do is work towards the future you want to create. So drop the past and stop stressing over your future.
7. Trust The Process And Give It Time
Inevitably, you will at some point reach your goals. There is no need to feel like you’re lacking or like your life is now at its worst without your goals at hand. Yes, your situation may look a lot better in the future but that doesn’t mean where you’re at right now is an issue. You need to be where you’re at right now so that you can start somewhere and take action towards building your dream life. Everything takes time and the more you push yourself each day, the closer you will be to achieving your goals.
